Teaching Artist Approach

In a flamenco dance residency, historical and visual aids such as video and audio recordings, photographs, imagery concepts and flamenco forms such as guitar, singing and rhythmic clapping or "palmas" will be added into the course material. Students will be introduced to the instructors' stylistic choices as well as, basic vocabulary regarding the various structures or "palos" within the flamenco art form.
Depending on the length of the residency more involvement and focus in the communication that transpires in a flamenco cuadro setting will be discussed with an option for students to perform a set choreography: dance, song, guitar. Technical preparation for executing movements with proper alignment will be emphasized. The focus of the class will be on increasing movement vocabulary, such as marking over letras (song), executing an escobilla (footwork section), tempo changes, calling in or closing an idea (llamadas), and performance quality.
A safe and respectful environment where students are encouraged and guided in their learning processes, allows them to develop not only as dance artists, but as scholars and active participants of our society.

Program Snapshot

Program Snapshot Focus

Lecture / Demonstraton

Program Description

Program content includes the demonstration, performance and/or instruction of flamenco dance that includes song and music. Program relevance is usually taken care of before my arrival to my performance, lec/dem or residency. I know what the focus of the event will be, whether it be the general dance/music of flamenco, the dance technique of flamenco, the communication between the dancers and dancers in flamenco, the cultures of Spain and how they contributed to the art of flamenco. Program relevance will be determined before I arrive and then may be "tweaked" after assessing the true nature of the audience on the given day of event.

Age-appropriate activities: I am fortunate to derive my living from an art form that most people I have encountered find exciting, interesting and not at all offensive. I can fairly easily translate every activity to engage most groups, ages and populations. I might use different language to explain a subject or activity and I might spend much less or much more time and be easier or harder on the participants depending on all of the above factors.

How do you build a relationship with an audience? Honesty, transparency, confidence in your art form, your knowledge and your ability to communicate what it is you do with whoever might be listening to you.

Technical Requirements

I can adjust and accommodate to any facility's technical abilities. I certainly can make use of A/V equipment by bringing in DVDs of performances or CDs of artists.

Space Requirements

My main requirement is that the space be safe and that it be comfortable for the students. I can adjust and accommodate to any facility's space availability, yet, it is my preference to offer dance instruction in a dance studio, or a room where a hard wood floor is available, due to the percussiveness executed in the footwork.

Supply Requirements

I can adjust and accommodate to any facility's/classroom's budget for supplies. However, good communication is imperative. If the school would like a final performance in a concert setting, then a budget for costuming, flamenco dance shoes, and live music will need to be assessed.

Special Considerations

Please see above Technical, Space and Supply Requirements.
